was introduced to allow pets to travel abroad with their owners and return to the UK without quarantine. Strict conditions apply and must be met to avoid quarantine (six months) on return. •Plan well in advance. The process of obtaining a valid PETS certificate allowing return to the UK takes at least seven months. •Check the country you intend to travel to is part of the scheme. Not all countries are included in the scheme. •The Pet Travel Scheme represents the UK’s requirement to return to the UK without a quarantine period, but check the requirements of the destination country you wish to visit (these vary considerably between countries). •Check with your carrier (e.g. your airline) if you are not travelling by car. •The scheme is regularly updated. Always check with us at the practice or with the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (website www.dardni.gov.uk before undertaking an overseas trip. 1.Your pet must be fitted with a microchip. 2.Your pet must be vaccinated against rabies. 3. A month later, your pet must then be blood-tested to ensure that the vaccination has worked. 4. Your pet must be treated against ticks and tapeworm 24-28 hours before the return trip to the UK. This will usually be done in the foreign country. However, if you leaving the UK on a day trip, this will need to be done in the UK before departure. It is important to note that this must be done by a veterinary surgeon who will issue an official certificate.
