Flea infestation is an all year round problem with central heating allowing them to breed throughout the year. In pets the fleabite can lead to skin irritation and allergies and also is responsible for the transmission of tapeworms in pets. The most common flea on the dog is the cat flea and so it is important to treat all your pets at the same time. Fleas are small and difficult to detect and often live in the pets environment (kennels, carpet, wooden floors etc). The best way to check for fleas is to check for flea dirt which are small black specks and if put on wet blotting paper they turn red as they are composed of dried blood. Many products such as sprays and spot on drops are available for treating fleas with some such as powders and collars being ineffective. Our staff are trained to recommend the best up to date treatment for your pet. It is also important to treat your pet’s environment at the same time as treating your pet. This involves washing, destroying anything that cannot be cleaned, vacuuming and applying an appropriate veterinary approved insecticide to the affected area. Cats and dogs commonly harbour both roundworms and tapeworms, in many cases with no obvious symptoms. It is vital to treat your pet regularly as these worms are a threat, not only to your pet, but also to you and especially your children. In puppies and kittens the main parasites are roundworms tending to give them a ‘pot bellied’ appearance. For the first 6 months it is vital to worm your puppy or kitten every few weeks. Adult dogs and cats develop some resistance to roundworms but are commonly exposed to tapeworms, especially in the case of hunting cats. We recommend that you worm your adult pet every 3 months with a broad spectrum wormer.
